Q: Have you ever had sock puppets as pets and what were their names?

A: Strangely, I've never seen socks that way, what's strange is that I love puppets, not in a strange way mind you, I just think they're fun and socks are fun but socks as puppets has never struck me as fun and it sure didn't do pets.com any good.

- Niqkita, founder of on-line sock retailer Sock Dreams, from an interview.

"I've found through the years that revenge or redemption is a very poor motivator. It's based on emotion and it's not based on intellect. Revenge is shallow intellectually. It's better to hold a positive frame of mind than a negative thought."

- Ken Miller, head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Roughriders are facing the Montreal Alouettes in the 2010 Grey Cup game on Nov. 28 for the Canadian Football League championship. The Roughriders lost to the Alouettes on the last play in last year's Grey Cup game.

'Not long after returning, Reynolds was hired by Lucasfilm to lead a production team around Tunisia, guiding them to sites they needed again to shoot the upcoming trilogy of Star Wars prequels. He was later asked to collaborate on a series of Star Wars reference books called Incredible Cross-Sections, which painstakingly devise mechanical explanations for the visible parts and armaments of every Star Wars vehicle. A UCLA professor writing about the books noted, "People who would never read the instruction book that came with an appliance they use in their kitchen every day devour the inner workings of a device that does not and cannot exist except in the imagination."'

- Jon Mooallem, in the article Raiders of the lost R2: Excavating a galaxy far, far away, about Star Wars fan David West Reynolds, who has searched out many of the locations used for filming the movie series. [Do any readers know who the UCLA professor quoted is? -eds.]

"Last summer, out of pleasure and obsession, not for work, I reread the novel in four more English translations,... frequently checking passages in the French text, as best I could, on a Kindle. (The Kindle was later given away, because this exercise in flicking back and forth between pages finally proved to me the vast technological superiority of the printed book over the electronic gadget.)"

"The essential problem is this. An elderly person's real needs are fundamentally different from the needs of all the rest of us. The critical-care system is designed for prevention and rescue. Its carefully developed, standardized, science-based procedures work well for the middle-aged. But no two fragile elderly people are alike. Their diseases are beyond fixing. Their real issues are comfort and function, not rescue and repair, and where they really want to be is in their home. Yet, we still try to cure them. Rather than attending to their comfort, we overmedicate them in a well-intentioned effort to improve their futures."

- Margaret Wente, Little old ladies are crashing the system, Globe and Mail.

"The idea of light somehow bending didn't make any sense, until Dad reminded me that when you held up a glass of water, your fingers on the far side of the glass looked like they'd been chopped off and moved. That was because the water was bending the light. . . .

"All of a sudden what Dad was saying did make sense and the knowledge of it truly lit me up.

"Dad, who was watching me, said, "Eureka!" He started telling me about this ancient Greek fellow named Archimedes who ran naked through the streets shouting, "Eureka!" after he figured out a way to calculate volume while sitting in his bathtub.

"I could see why Archimedes got all excited. There was nothing finer than the feeling that came rushing through you when it clicked and you suddenly understood something that had puzzled you. It made you think it just might be possible to get a handle on this old world after all."
