"Those who think that it is okay to behave in a way that demeans or exploits their colleagues have no place in this army. If that does not suit you, then get out."

"We had that song out and they really loved the video," Franti says over the phone from his home in San Francisco, recalling how U2 sought out his band to open dates on that tour. "They were using the video to start the Zoo TV show, playing it on the screens and then asked us to play with them. I remember the first couple of weeks of that tour because I knew their music but I didn't really know the guys in the band--I wasn't a super huge fan.

"After the first week, Bono comes up to me and he's like, 'Michael, can I have a quiet word with you?' and I go, 'What's up?' And he says, 'Well, there's just this one thing,' and I'm thinking, 'Man, we're going to get kicked off the tour.' And he goes, 'It's just that, my guitar player: his name is the Edge. Not, Ed.'

"For the first week, I was going 'Yo Ed, I like that hat! Yo Ed, nice solo on that song!'" Franti laughs. "I guess it was enough that the Edge had to go to Bono to say, 'Look man, you gotta get this guy to call me by my real name.'"

- Michael Franti, musician, on touring with U2, from an interview with Vish Khanna.

"Even on the terms of his most generous depictions, Batman is a dingus. He is a trust-fund billionaire who puts on a balaclava with ears so that he can do technology-enhanced karate at pickpockets and muggers; who sinks his fortune into paramilitary hardware in support of his one-man campaign to punch a major city into peace; whose concept of justice is throwing on his Goth Navy SEAL costume and terrifying people so they'll follow the rules better; who evidently has never once considered that Gotham City's continued awfulness might refute his methods. He throws darts shaped like his brand logo. He's Jeff Bezos on steroids and paint-thinner fumes. He is a choad."

- Albert Burneko

"But most advertising nowadays doesn't look like that. Advertising is just another revenue stream to be maximised by those with access to our attention. Whether it requires our tacit consent or a quid pro quo is entirely contingent. Since we are not formally - that is, legally - part of the transaction, our influence over its terms declines in proportion to our inability to escape it.

"For example, lots of companies sell you things, and then go on to sell your attention (and all the information they can glean about you) to other companies as well. Like movie theatres, live sports events, cable television, airlines and so on. The digital subscription I bought from The Economist feeds me the same advert for the same MBA programme every couple of pages - a level of crassness that demonstrates just how low these companies value the attention even of their paying customers."

- Thomas Wells, philosopher, in his essay, "Is Advertising Morally Justifiable? The Importance of Protecting Our Attention".

"For our purposes, we've come up with a formal and clinical definition of zombism. From our observations (and our penchant for acronyms in science), we classify zombism "scientifically" as Consciousness Deficit Hypoactivity Disorder, or CDHD. By this definition, persons afflicted with this syndrome lack full waking consciousness and, typically, present with reduced overall brain activity (unless, of course, they get hungry or angry)."

- Timothy Verstynen and Bradley Voytek, from their 2014 book, Do Zombies Dream of Undead Sheep?: A Neuroscientific View of the Zombie Brain.
