This was the time of the automatic transmission, of power steering, power brakes, and more powerful engines. The long stabbing fins, easily mocked, were only the extreme and outward signs that the car, like a yacht, was meant for cruising. The conspicuous adornment of chrome was a sign that America had metal to waste. And what could be more deluxe than to bring the car under one's own roof, in the two-car garage? Shopping and leisure were retailored for an age of easy access. The shopping center represented the possibility of consumption without limits, the logical extension of the department store.
