"After he read the proofs of my book The Abstract Wild, Peter Matthiessen gave me some advice: Don't pay any attention to reviews or critics. If they are positive, they will inflate your ego, and that's not good. If they are negative, they will make you angry, and that's not good. If they disagree with your facts, then you will end up contesting them, and that's annoying, tiresome, and wastes time, and that, in turn, is not good. I have tried to abide by his advice (there was no one I respected more), and I see no reason to change."

- Jack Turner, in The Sun, November 2014 issue. He was responding to letters to the editor occasioned by his interview in the August 2014 issue.

[The interview is at https://thesunmagazine.org/issues/464/not_on_any_map].

"My mother majored in English, wrote poetry, belonged to Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, and drive around Colombus in a Ford roadster that she called Pluto--but not in honor of the Disney Dog. She had named it instead for a potent laxative of that era, Pluto Water, whose advertising slogan she found congruent with her driving manners: 'Pluto Passes Everything!'"

"I started speaking in order to fend off what seemed an imminent move by police to start arresting protestors for breach of the peace. This followed an argument over whether an old sofa and rug constituted "sleeping equipment". A policeman stated that there were legal rulings that "sleeping equipment" included anything that could be adapted for the purpose of sleeping. I suggested to him that he confiscate my trousers, as these were capable of being rolled up and used as a pillow."

"i'm really distressed. what if i damaged the image of santa for children everywhere?!?!?!? i am so sorry for being so irreverant - i promise to you all that when i write my next hit- 'easter bunny, you've been hopping all over my field for too long', i will try to do so with more taste and social responsibility!"

"People are always telling you: "Be creative! Make new music! Do art! Invent things! Science and technology!" And then when it comes to words they're like, "Don't! No! Creativity stops right here, whippersnappers, give it a rest." But that makes no sense to me. Words are great. We should have more of them. I want you to make as many new words as possible."

"It is now time to take action. The individuals responsible for the criminal conspiracy revealed in today's report must be brought to justice, and must face criminal penalties commensurate with the gravity of their crimes.

"The fact that the policies revealed in this report were authorised at a high level within the US Government provides no excuse whatsoever. Indeed, it reinforces the need for criminal accountability."

- Ben Emmerson, United Nations Special Rapporteur on counter terrorism and human rights, responding to the U.S. Senate report on torture committed by the CIA.

I know that victims of torture will offer intentionally misleading information if they think their captors will believe it. I know they will say whatever they think their torturers want them to say if they believe it will stop their suffering."

- John McCain, U.S. Senator, commenting on the recently released Senate report on the CIA's former interrogation program. The report showed the CIA to have used torture frequently.

Edison didn't want to talk to any of us, although his lab was interesting (no A/C, fyi). Einstein actually ran away when we approached him. "Strong encryption and sound computer security is the best way to keep Americans' data safe from hackers and foreign threats. It is the best way to protect our constitutional rights at a time when a person's whole life can often be found on his or her smartphone. And strong computer security can rebuild consumer trust that has been shaken by years of misstatements by intelligence agencies about mass surveillance of Americans. This bill sends a message to leaders of those agencies to stop recklessly pushing for new ways to vacuum up Americans' private information, and instead put that effort into rebuilding public trust."

- Ron Wyden, U.S. Senator, on introducing his Secure Data Act on December 4, 2014
