`You're considerably older than I am, Boris,' said Kitteridge defensively. `In spite of your memories - or because of them - don't you find old age a terrible let-down?'

`Not one scrap!' boomed Boris. `Old age is stuffed with unsuspected consolations. I could mention scores. F'rinstance, as one gets older, one's friends and enemies begin to die off. If, as in my case, one has no friends and many enemies, the daily obituary column has all the anticipatory charms of a first love-letter. Oh, yes, the declining years bring countless unconsidered bonuses.'

"As a culture, we embrace people for no reason other than the fact that they have a job that puts them in a position of recognizability," Watterson aggressively opined. "People who have no other virtues necessarily are somehow made into these things that we devour...There's something very strange about our fascination with other people's lives that I don't think is entirely healthy."

- Bill Watterson, from Looking for Calvin and Hobbes: The Unconventional Story of Bill Watterson and His Revolutionary Comic Strip, by Nevin Martell. Watterson's comments are from an interview published in the Plain Dealer magazine of August 30, 1987.

"The very notion that on any given story all you have to do is report what both sides say and you've done a fine job of objective journalism debilitates the press. There is no such thing as objectivity, and the truth, that slippery little bugger, has the oddest habit of being way to hell off on one side or the other: it seldom nestles neatly halfway between any two opposing points of view. The smug complacency of much of the press--I have heard many an editor say, 'Well, we're being attacked by both sides so we must be right'--stems from the curious notion that if you get a quote from both sides, preferably in an official position, you've done the job. In the first place, most stories aren't two-sided, they're 17-sided at least. In the second place, it's of no help to either the readers or the truth to quote one side saying, 'Cat,' and the other side saying 'Dog,' while the truth is there's an elephant crashing around out there in the bushes."

The Quotation Of The Day Mailing List

Quotation of the Day administrivia for March 19, 2010

20 years ago, when email was still a novelty, writer Duncan Thornton sent messages occasionally with the subject "Quotation of the day" to a group of friends. The messages weren't sent daily, but it wasn't long before messages were sent more frequently, and the list membership grew as friends-of-friends joined.

As manual management of the list became more onerous, Duncan passed the editorship on to me, as I had the computer skills and facilities to manage the growing list. Older subscribers will certainly recognize Duncan's name, while newer members of the list will have seen his submissions over recent years.

For several years, Duncan has struggled against multiple sclerosis. Last year, an experimental surgical technique for this condition, called CCSVI, was announced. While there seems to be some promise in the new technique, the costs of undergoing the procedure are not covered by health insurance.

Duncan has decided that taking the risk to improve his life outweighs a lengthy wait for the procedure to become available and funded in Canada. He will be travelling to Poland this spring for treatment. His expenses will be considerable.

I am asking Quotation of the day subscribers to consider helping our list's founder in his time of need. If you wish to contribute financially to offset the costs of his treatment, you can get details and find Paypal links at http://www.thornton-poland-fund.ca/Poland_Fund/Home.html.

For news coverage of Duncan's trip, browse http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2010/03/18/ott-ms-surgery.html and http://sites.google.com/site/quotationoftheday/links/duncan-thornton---globe-and-mail

To find out about Duncan's writing, see http://www.kalifax.com.

A description of Multiple Sclerosis and CCSVI is at http://www.mssociety.ca/en/research/medmmo_20091021_faq.htm.

Thank you for considering my appeal.

I once asked advertising legend Carl Ally what makes the creative person tick. Ally responded, "The creative person wants to be a know-it-all. He wants to know about all kinds of things: ancient history, nineteenth century mathematics, current manufacturing techniques, flower arranging, and hog futures. Because he (or she) never knows when these ideas might come together to form a new idea. It may happen six minutes later or six years down the road. But he has faith that it will happen."

"And why should any man who writes, even if he write things immortal, nurse anger at the world's neglect? Who asked him to publish? Who promised him a hearing? Who has broken faith with him? If my shoemaker turn me out an excellent pair of boots, and I, in somemood of cantankerous unreason, throw them back upon his hands, the man has just cause of complaint. But your poem, your novel, who bargained with you for it? If it is honest journeywork, yet lacks purchasers, at most you may call yourself a hapless tradesman. If it come from on high, with what decency do you fret and fume because it is not paid for in heavy cash? For the work of man's mind there is one test, and one alone, the judgment of generations yet unborn. If you have written a great book, the world to come will know of it. But you don't care for posthumous glory. You want to enjoy fame in a comfortable armchair. Ah, that is quite another thing. Have the courage of your desire. Admit yourself a merchant, and protest to gods and men that the merchandise you offer is of better quality than much which sells for a high price. You may be right, and indeed it is hard upon you that Fashion does not turn to your stall."
