The Quotation Of The Day Mailing List

Quotation of the Day administrivia for March 19, 2010

20 years ago, when email was still a novelty, writer Duncan Thornton sent messages occasionally with the subject "Quotation of the day" to a group of friends. The messages weren't sent daily, but it wasn't long before messages were sent more frequently, and the list membership grew as friends-of-friends joined.

As manual management of the list became more onerous, Duncan passed the editorship on to me, as I had the computer skills and facilities to manage the growing list. Older subscribers will certainly recognize Duncan's name, while newer members of the list will have seen his submissions over recent years.

For several years, Duncan has struggled against multiple sclerosis. Last year, an experimental surgical technique for this condition, called CCSVI, was announced. While there seems to be some promise in the new technique, the costs of undergoing the procedure are not covered by health insurance.

Duncan has decided that taking the risk to improve his life outweighs a lengthy wait for the procedure to become available and funded in Canada. He will be travelling to Poland this spring for treatment. His expenses will be considerable.

I am asking Quotation of the day subscribers to consider helping our list's founder in his time of need. If you wish to contribute financially to offset the costs of his treatment, you can get details and find Paypal links at http://www.thornton-poland-fund.ca/Poland_Fund/Home.html.

For news coverage of Duncan's trip, browse http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2010/03/18/ott-ms-surgery.html and http://sites.google.com/site/quotationoftheday/links/duncan-thornton---globe-and-mail

A description of Multiple Sclerosis and CCSVI is at http://www.mssociety.ca/en/research/medmmo_20091021_faq.htm.

Thank you for considering my appeal.
