| Quotation of the Day for April 1, 2014
"For mushroom hunters in the San Francisco Bay Area and the north-central California coastal region, the widely cited "tragedy of the commons" has become a tragedy of no commons. All of the various land management agencies in the area, both public agencies such as those described above and private ones such as the Nature Conservancy, imitate each other in establishing protected or "sacred" spaces with little or no consideration of previously existing informal usage rights or traditions. Many of the mushrooms are picked anyway, and the porcini crop of 2007 was by many accounts one of the largest in recent memory. But an entire generation has grown up foraging furtively in the shadows, skulkers and creepers playing hide-and-seek with authorities."
